Methodology

At Netflix, our impact goes far beyond entertainment.

The Netflix Effect explores the economic, cultural and social impact of our films and series, and how it ripples out across economies, industries and everyday life, day after day, week after week.

To understand this impact, we’ve brought together facts and figures that speak to the economic value, job creation and viewing trends of Netflix productions, as well as diving into stories from third parties around the world.

We measured the direct, indirect, and induced economic value generated by Netflix's operational and content-related spending across countries worldwide from 2016 through the end of 2025. This contribution to GDP, or the Gross Value Added (GVA), measures the value added to the economy as a result of our investments, including the production of shows and films.

These contribution figures include the impact of:

  • Our direct spending to businesses (e.g. vendors, crew, operational partners)

  • The related indirect spending with vendors' own suppliers throughout the supply chain

  • The induced portion of household spending related to wages earned through Netflix-related work

The estimates do not include things like increased tourism, or any business selling themed merchandise or experiences generated by our productions.

We measured the total number of cast and crew positions hired by Netflix productions globally, including distinct run-of-show roles (e.g. regular cast and crew engaged for the duration of a production) and non-run-of-show roles (e.g. day players, background extras, and other temporary hires).

We’ve also shared data related to our viewing engagement. We regularly publish our Weekly Top 10, Most Popular Lists and bi-annual Engagement reports so members and creators can see what’s popular. For more information on this methodology, please visit Tudum.com.

Unless a reference time is specified, “members” refers to Netflix’s active global member base as of Q2 2026, and figures reflect their viewing to date since joining Netflix.
